about

Hakanoa Reserve in the central Auckland suburb of Grey Lynn was the location for a mid-winter ritual of percussion music performed on instruments constructed from found materials and trash.

Hidden off the beaten track, surrounded by native flora, beside a fallen tree adjacent to an inner city stream in an unassuming leafy neighbourhood, the percussionists of Big Boxmen produced energetic offerings to the local people and spirits of past, present and future.

This recorded snippet of an epic performance gives an insight into the secretive underworld of ritual music in suburban Aotearoa.
